This week, at Forest School, we took part in the RSPB Big School's Birdwatch. Unfortunately, torrential rain made conditions less than desirable so prior to venturing out, we looked through guidebooks to familiarize ourselves with some of the birds we were likely to spot. We also listened to a recording of birdsong, so that we might be able to identify birds sheltering from the rain by their calls.
Birds that have been spotted in the school grounds recently include the following (pictures courtesy of the RSPB):

Collared Dove |
Carrion Crow |

Collared Dove |
House Sparrow |
Magpie |
Pied Wagtail |
Robin
We managed to spot 13 house sparrows happily feasting on the Early Years bird tables. We also saw a blackbird taking refuge in our hawthorn hedgerow and two black headed gulls hovering over the playground. |
