TIMBER!!

Today, the Year 6 Forest School group helped to take down the school Christmas tree. Before we began, the boys went through our tool talk. They began by using loppers to remove the branches. They swept up the pine needles and moved the branches to one side before tackling the trunk so that they wouldn't present a slip/trip hazard. Then, they  used a bow saw to cut down the trunk. Before cutting down the trunk, they boys discussed which side they would need to cut so that it would land where we needed it to.They cut a wedge from the trunk on the side where they wanted it to fall and then made another cut to the opposite side of the trunk. This stops the blade of the bow saw from being trapped by the trunk as it begins to lean as well as ensuring that it doesn't fall in the direction of the person doing the cutting.

They collected the branches on a tarpaulin so that they could safely transport them outside.
The branches, pine needles and trunk will all be put to good use over the coming months.

  1. Fab - Lovely to see how people are using their trees in different ways.

For the first time, I bought a potted tree which is going to be planted in our outdoor space tomorrow. We may have to find some good brashings to mulch the area too.

  2. As well as the cut Christmas tree, we also planted a dinky live tree in our entrance way flowerbed. Fingers crossed it will thrive and grow as the children do.
