Snow Painting and Shovelling

The snow is still piled up all around us meaning the vibrant colours of spring flowers have yet to show themselves. We decided to brighten things up today at Forest School with a spot of snow painting. The children followed the green snow arrows to a smiley welcome message and the awaiting pots of paint. Before starting we agreed that we could paint anywhere on the snow and on our log features but not on the playground furniture.

The children experimented with different brushes and different places to paint on the snow. They discovered that the snow that had been compacted was easier to paint on that the freshly fallen snow. B showed me that if he mixed black with purple, he could make dark purple. D practiced writing his name in the snow and R use a trowel to mix the snow into multi-coloured slush.

R noticed that the ramp to one of the classrooms near where we were painting was covered in snow. He decided he wanted to use his trowel to clear the snow to make it safe. He started digging with his trowel, but then he spotted a shovel and soon realised he could use this to move the snow more quickly. The other boys were keen to help out, so we collected some spades from the storage container and set to work. R showed the other boys where to move the snow to so that it wouldn't be dangerous. They took it in turns with the different spades and shovels to find out which one was the most efficient.

After a hot chocolate break, the children returned to their painting. D chose a log to decorate. He began by painting stripes on the log and then spattered paint over the log Jackson Pollack style. B used two brushes to swirl red and green paint together one of the log stepping stones.

Just before the end of our session we hid some chocolate eggs in the snow and marked the hiding places with a painted golden x in preparation for our Easter Faith Day tomorrow. I wonder who the lucky treasure hunters will be?
