Hedgehog Hunting

Today, our colourful new waterproofs arrived from www.waterproofworld.com. We have chosen to invest in a Scandinavian brand of waterproofs which will help to keep our children warm and dry in all weathers. With more children now taking part in Forest School and outdoor learning at Fagley Primary, we have chosen to colour-code the different sizes to make changing time quicker and easier. Our Year 3 Forest School group helped me to sort through our new waterproofs and hang them on the colour-coded pegs in our Forest School changing area. They were very excited to be the first group to try on the new waterproofs.

Once we were all suited and booted, we headed outside. In class, the children have been reading The Hodgeheg by Dick King-Smith. They recalled from the story that hedgehogs eat slugs and snails, so we set off in search of tasty treats for hedgehogs. After hunting under hedges and rocks we turned our attention to the vegetable garden. Dylan noticed that lots of the vegetable leaves had holes in and deduced that slugs and snails may be the culprits. After some careful investigation, we discovered slugs hiding amongst the cabbage leaves and snails sneaking around the spinach. A caterpillar or two was spotted curled up in the cauliflowers. Any hedgehogs venturing into our vegetable garden would find a veritable feast awaiting them!

After a snack and a spot of minibeast role play, we moved on to our next activity -hedgehog collages. The children scoured the school grounds for natural materials to use on their hedgehog collages. They chose spiky black grass and bristly dry dock seeds for spines and shiny blackberries for eyes. They were very excited to be able to show off their works of art to the rest of their class.
