Slow and Steady Wins the Race

In Year 3, the children have been studying fables including The Tortoise and the Hare. At Forest School ,the Year 3 group began their session hunting for jigsaw pieces that had been hidden by the Year 2 Forest School group. At first, the children dashed around excitedly like the hare from the story but soon realised that it wasn't the best way to find the pieces. Remembering tortoise's advice 'slow and steady wins the race' they took their time to carefully scour the school grounds in search of the elusive pieces. Dylan said he was imagining he was a Year 2 child and thinking about where he would have hidden the pieces. The children soon began to notice patterns in where the puzzle pieces were hidden. Muskan noticed that lots of pieces were hidden in the butterfly border, whilst Silvie spotted that pieces had been hidden on the ends of the logs in the log trail.
The children did really well to recover almost all the pieces and build their puzzles.

Next the group decided they would like to have a go at making some of the characters from the story. Muskan and Silvie wanted to make hare ear crowns, whilst Dylan was keen to make use of some pebbles he had found to make a tortoise. He suggested that the hard shiny pebbles would make a great tortoise shell. The pebbles were dull and muddy from being outside so Dylan collected them in a bucket so that he could wash them and make them nice and shiny. Once they were wet, Dylan found that the pebbles would not stick to the bamboo pieces he had prepared as a base by covering them in double sided tape. He decided that he would take the pebbles inside to dry out and continue making his model next time.
After making their hare ear hats, Muskan and Silvie thought it would be fun for use to make each other autumn crowns from the leaves and flowers in the butterfly border. They look rather splendid I'm sure you will agree.
