Spring Term New Groups

This term, three new groups of children have started Forest School in Key Stage Two. Today was the Year 5/6 group's first visit to the woods.

Our session begins with our daily risk assessment and boundary setting. We use brightly coloured strips of fabric to mark out the area we will be exploring.

Next we play warm-up games which help us to become familiar with our recall signals and the woodland terrain.

Once the children have become familiar with our woodland base camp, they will be guided to use the stimulus of the setting to pursue their interests and become independent learners. The woodland classroom provides the opportunity for emotional, intellectual and physical development . The children will be learn about woodland flora (trees and plants) and fauna (animals and insects). They will discover how to use natural materials for arts and crafts. They may also create stories, make music, follow maps, make trails, build campfires, make dens and learn bushcraft skills . At Forest School, children work at their own pace and set their own targets.

At the end of each session we reflect on our experiences over a drink and a snack. The children are encouraged to think about how they can build on their skills in the next session.

Children attending Forest School are observed to become self-motivated, resilient and reflective learners.
