Stick Battles

Beech group initially asked if we could make bow and arrows in the woods this session. We headed to the part of the woodland where there is lots of hazel suitable for coppicing. The children chose some good straight rods which they used the loppers to cut.

They found that some of the rods they had cut were a little too thick and inflexible to be able to bend. This led to a different purpose for the sticks evolving. Two of the children used their sticks to create a stick to stick combat game. Gradually a code of conduct evolved whereby each child had two sticks and sticks could only make contact sticks. They were careful to ensure that they kept enough distance between each other that they would not accidentally hit each other's face. As the game evolved children participating were able to read each other's body language to determine whether all parties were still enjoying the game. They were quick to halt the game and check on each other if any blow landed was deemed to be outside their agreed rules.
