Post evolution

The den building posts have been a huge hit with the children. At the beginning of the week, one child chose to thread a skipping rope through the brackets at the top of the post and holding on to either end of the rope, scaled the post. Other children quickly imitated.
Halfway through the week, one child asked if they could knot the ropes together from one post to the next. He was encouraged to explore his idea and soon constructed a rather rickety rope bridge between a few of the posts. The children were keen to test it out.

The boy who had originally suggested knotting the ropes together commented on how wobbly the 'rope bridge' was. I suggested he look at how the structure could be made more stable. The boy suggested that including another rope across the centre of the structure would help to make it more stable.
He engaged the other children using the rope bridge and persuaded them to help him knot an extra rope from the central post to the middle of the rope bridge. The additional rope helped to stabilise the structure and children quickly formed a line to test out the new improved bridge.
