Session 10 - Our First Campfire

We couldn't have asked for better weather for our first campfire. The day was bright and sunny with little wind. As if that wasn't lucky enough; on my way to school I passed some council workers felling and ash tree. They very kindly agreed to let me take some of the wood.

Our site is rather waterlogged this time of year so I was able to beg some sand from the builders to line our freshly dug fire pit.

At the start of our session, we went over the campfire procedures to ensure that all the children knew how to behave in the campfire area.

We used cotton wool and a fire steel to start the fire and the silver birch kindling I had collected and dried out worked well to get the fire going. With the addition of a few pieces of seasoned apple wood and some of the ash I had acquired on the way to work, we soon had a good little fire going.

The children used peelers to prepare some skewers for our Forest School treats

We experimented with toasting hot cross buns, marshmallows and cookie dough and discussed what we would like to cook next time. Popcorn and chocolate bananas were popular suggestions.

The children toasted a few marshmallows for the nursery children and staff who were watching with great interest.

We finished the session by safely extinguishing our fire and ensuring that we had left the site as we had found it.
