Campfire Training Day.

I attended a Bradford Outdoor Creative Learning Network meeting last Thursday aimed at sharing skills and ideas surrounding campfire cookery. We began the day by reviewing how to prepare a fire circle and games that can be played around the fire circle to reinforce fire circle safety. We moved on to the selection of firewood and different methods for laying and igniting fires.
The best part of the day, was trying out different recipes to cook over the fire.

We made a huge pot of chunky vegetable soup which was accompanied by bannock bread which was cooked on sticks.
Pitta pizzas were created by filling pitta bread with cheese and pizza sauce. These were wrapped in several layers of foil and placed on the burning embers.
Toasted marshmallows sandwiched between chocolate digestives to create smores, was one of the sweeter options, but my favourite recipe was fruit crumble. In several layers of foil, we placed a blob of custard, sliced strawberries, raspberries and bananas and topped it with crumble mix. The foil was formed into a pouch and placed into the embers.
