Session 12 - Souper Kotlich

A decidedly frosty scene greeted us for Forest School today. Luckily we had come prepared with a flask of tea and winter vegetable soup to warm up in our lovely new kotlich (Serbian cooking pot).

As soon as the children were togged out (including double layers of socks to keep out the frosty pinch) we set to work lighting the fire. The children are now proficient in the use of fire steels and quickly got the tinder lit. The wood took longer to light than our last campfire, but the children were very patient. One child had remembered the discussion we had had last week about pine needles and suggested that we add some of the smaller pine branches to the fire bowl to help get the fire going. This proved to be an excellent idea and we soon had a good fire going.

The children took turns to add fuel to the fire and stir the soup. Before long, the soup was bubbling and steaming and it was time to ladle it out in to our new enamel bowls. We chatted about what else we could cook over the fire and top suggestions included beans and curry. We decided that it would be great for some of the parents to come in and cook over the fire with us, so we are going to set a date and send out some invites.

We finished our session with a spot of marshmallow toasting and then the children all chipped in to clear everything away and extinguish the fire. As we poured water on the embers, the children shared their thoughts on what each of them had contributed to the session today.
