Pee Wit and Pyrography

Today we began our session with a twist on the game 'Find Your Flock'

The children distributed bird spotter cards around the school grounds. On each card was a picture of a bird, the bird name and the bird call sound. A set containing one of each bird was retained by the caller. The caller  read out the bird call of their chosen bird and the other children had to try and be the first to find a matching card and read out the bird name.

Murad was very quick off the mark and managed to find seven cards to everyone else's four.

Next we moved on to practicing our bow saw skills. The children searched the grounds to find suitable wood from which to make wood cookies. We planned to turn them into tree decorations or name badges. Murad found a piece of applewood and Reece found a pine log. Farhan found a rather slimy 6x4 post!

We compared the suitability of each piece of wood for making wood cookies from. Reece found that his wood was easy to cut, but the diameter of the log was a bit too thin. Farhan decided that his fence post was too slimy and the wrong shape. Murad's log was harder to cut but was a good diameter and had a nice fine grain making it the best choice wood cookies. The boys noticed how the rings on the harder applewood were much more tightly packed that those of the pine log.

They worked in pairs to each cut a wooden disc (some much chunkier than others!)

For the second part of the session, we moved indoors so that we could test out our new pyrography tool.
We used paint pens to draw Christmas Trees and our initials on our wooden discs. We then used the pyrography pen to outline our designs. We quickly realised that there is quite an art to using a pyrography pen! We plan to experiment some more with it in the new year by creating some labels for our school vegetable garden
