Session 10 - This Week at Forest School

Our Year 6 Forest School group have had the chance to put their tool use skills in to practice by helping to put up our school Christmas tree. The children began by working in pairs using the bow saw to saw off  a section of the tree trunk. This allows the tree to take up water.

Next, using the loppers, they removed the lower branches so that the tree could be fitted securely into its pot.

We talked about the features of a Christmas tree. Farhan said that the pine needles made the tree spiky to touch. We discussed why the tree might need to be spiky.
We thought about why some trees stay green in winter and some lose their leaves.

Once the tree was up the boys manoeuvred it to show off its best side and began decorating it with lights and baubles.

Every child and member of staff in school has hand-painted a bauble to adorn the tree.

When it is time to take the tree down, it will be used to make minibeast habitats, woodland crafts and for firewood.

The Year 3 Forest School group used some of the pine branches to create mini Christmas trees. They attached the branches to log cookies and decorated them with foil streamers and stars.
